What a FIG phone actually is

FIG is one of the larger kosher phone brands in the US market. Its devices are Android phones running a customised operating system that has had the browser, the app store and social media removed at the system level — and, per FIG's own description, those restrictions stay in place through a factory reset. That is a meaningfully stronger guarantee than a filtering app, and it is the main reason FIG phones are accepted where institutions require a filtered device.

FIG sells four devices at four price points, and each one is ordered in one of three configurations. Which configuration you pick matters more than which handset you pick, because the configuration decides whether the phone can text, take photos or navigate at all.

• Talk + Text. Calls, SMS, camera, music. FIG's most popular configuration and the default most buyers want.
• Talk + Text + Navigation. Adds Waze and Android Auto on the models that support them.

The configuration is set when the device is provisioned. Changing your mind later means going back to the seller, so decide honestly at the point of order — the most common regret in this category is buying a talk-only phone for someone who needed to text.

What every FIG phone blocks

Across the whole range, regardless of configuration, FIG devices have no web browser, no app store, no social media, no email app, no hotspot, and no video playback — the last of these on rabbinical advisement rather than for any technical reason. WhatsApp is not available on any FIG phone.

That last point catches people out. WhatsApp is the default channel for a lot of family, school and business communication, and if you need it, FIG is the wrong line — not because of a setting you have missed, but by design. The same is true of email: FIG's phones are for calls, texts and, at the top tiers, navigation.

Who FIG suits — and who it doesn't

Look elsewhere if you need WhatsApp or email; if you want a rugged phone — no FIG model carries an IP68 or MIL-STD rating, and this is the most common complaint in community forums about phones that live in pockets and on job sites; if you want the smallest possible device; or if $329–$369 for the flagship is more than the job is worth.
